European U16 Championships – Quarterfinals

Round-up of action on the quartefinals of the European U16 Championships in divisions A and B.

Division A

Belgium needed an overtime to advance to the semifinals by defeating France. Julie Allemand scored 9 of Belgium’s 11 points in overtime in the victory, she finished with 21. Spain were able to advance by narrowly beating out the hosts Hungarians.

Other two quarterfinals were blowouts where Russia and Italy proved to be class above Czech Republic and Slovak Republic.

Russia will face Spain in the semis while Belgium will take on Italy. Both games will be available live online at www.fibatv.com/live.

In the relegation group, Turkey and Serbia won to take the lead of the group in which only the winner will avoid relegation.

Division B

Both teams who won their groups in the second were eliminated by the fourth seeds from the other group. Tournament’s leading scorer Borislava Hristova led Bulgaria past Finland. Portuguese center Maria Kostourkova had enormous 25 points and 17 rebounds in Portugal’s upset of Slovenia.

Other two quarters were much tighter. Lithuania defeated Poland with 3 free throws in the final 15 seconds of the game. Latvia advanced past Ukraine on a Beate Markane three point shot with 8 seconds remaining in the game.

In the semifinals Bulgaria will play Latvia and Lithuania – Portugal. Winners of both semis will earn promotion to division A, losers will play out another spot in division A.
