European U20 Championship Division A – Day Three

First round concluded on Saturday as the twelve teams who advanced to the second round were determined.

Game between Belarus and Lithuania ended with a 6 point win by Belarus which suited both teams as both advanced to the second round on points for/against ratio in games between Lithuania, Belarus and Latvia. Maryia Filonchyk put up impressive 26 points and 13 rebounds for Belarus. For Latvia to move on to the second round they would have had to defeat the defending champions Spain which they weren’t able to do and now will play for the last spot in Division A.

After two 2 point wins in the first two days, Sweden found themselves on the other side of a 2 point win as they fell to Netherlands. In other Group B game it was all or nothing for Poland – a win against Italy would give them the first place in the group, while a loss would mean playing in relegation round. After being down by 16 in the third quarter the Italians found themselves down just 3 with 3 minutes to play, but were ultimately unable to get over the hump. Magdalena Zietara led the Poles with 17 points.

With the shorthanded Portugal not being able to offer much resistance to Ukraine in the second half, France and Ukraine have advanced to the second round, while Portugal will play in the relegation round. Tournament leading scorer Alina Iagupova continued to have her way with defenders by scoring 29 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. She was 4 assists short of a triple double. Turkey, despite playing without Pelin Bilgic, who appears to be one of the victims of food poisoning, defeated France and moved on to the second round undefeated.

Despite playing against just 6 players, Russia had a tough time against Serbia who led as late as the start of the fourth quarter. 19 year old Darya Namok led the way for Russians with 14 points.  Snezana Colic attempted almost half (26) of the Serbian shots while also scoring almost half (25) of the Serbian points. Slovak Republic eliminated Great Britain from second round contention. Zofia Hruscakova’s 17 points led five Slovak players in double digits.
