Tulsa Shock has been one of the bright spots in the WNBA during this subpar season. Despite being eliminated from playoffs and nothing but lottery balls left to play for, they still fight for victories. On Sunday they knocked off the San Antonio Silver Stars who were still fighting for homecourt advantage in the playoffs against the Los Angeles Sparks. The Silver Stars got beat where they themselves are the strongest – at the guard positions. Temeka Johnson scored 18, Ivory Latta added 15 and Roneeka Hodges 11 for Tulsa. The Silver Stars before the Olympic break were 13-6, since the break they’ve been 6-6. They’re not the team that could have been called title contenders anymore.
New York Liberty barely scraped a victory against the Washington Mystics to remain on top of Chicago Sky in the Eastern conference playoff push. That victory came at a cost as Plenette Pierson was forced to leave the court in the fourth quarter with an apparent knee injury. Mystics led by as much as 9 points in the fourth quarter before blowing the lead. Cappie Pondexter and Nicole Powell each scored 10 points in the fourth quarter.
Chicago Sky remain in the hunt, though they have to hope that the Liberty will lose 2 of their next three games. The Sky took care of their own business as they breezed through tank city Mercury. Shay Murphy scored 17 points in the second quarter for the Sky.
Despite playing without Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson, Seattle Storm provided some resistance to Connecticut Sun, even though they fell 13 points behind the favored Sun in the second quarter. 12-2 ending the to half mean that the Storm were back in the game. Storm trailed during the third quarter but were able to get on top in the fourth. Katie Smith 5 consecutive points gave the Storm a 4 point lead in the final minutes to which the Sun responded with a Kara Lawson three and Renee Montgomery throwing herself at a defender, hoping for a whistle which she got.
