Australian U19 women’s basketball national team, nicknamed “Gems”, swept 3 game series against New Zealand to determine the winner of FIBA Oceania U19 Championship.
As the FIBA Oceania champions the Australians have earned a place in FIBA U19 World Championship in 2013 which will take place in Lithuania.
Australia will join hosts Lithuania, as well as qualifiers from Europe – France, Russia, Serbia, Netherlands, Spain – and Americas – USA, Brazil, Argentina, Canada.
Top scorer over the three games for Australia was Casey Jo Samuels with combined 49 points, Carley Mijovic had 41, Stephanie Talbot and Alex Wilson had 39 points each. Talbot was the team’s leading rebounder with a total of 33 boards (11 per game), Mijovic had 24. Talbot was also the team’s leading assister with 11 assists. Mikhaela Donelly had 10.
