Tina Charles named WNBA 2012 MVP, Renee Montgomery – Sixth Player of the Year, Kara Lawson gets Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award

WNBA has announced it’s Most Valuable Player in 2012 – naming Connecticut’s Tina Charles. Two other Connecticut Sun players also were awarded with league awards – Renee Montgomery was named Sixth Player of the Year while Kara Lawson got Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award.

Charles was runner-up to Tamika Catchings last season in the MVP voting. This season she has averaged 18 points (5th in the league) with 49.9% shooting from the field, 10.5 rebounds (1st in the league) and 1.4 blocked shots (2nd in the league) per game leading Connecticut Sun to first place in the Eastern conference.

Charles kind of hinted of something major on Wednesday with these tweets:

Renee Montgomery was the leading bench scorer with 11.6 points and 2.6 assists per game.

Kara Lawson has been actively involved in raising both funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s research since her collegiate head coach, Pat Summitt, was diagnosed with early-onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type, last August. This season, she pledged to donate $50 for each 3-pointer made to the Pat Summitt Foundation, and the Connecticut Sun and Mohegan Sun matched her donation. Lawson set a new franchise record with 74 made 3′s this season, donating $3,700 personally to the cause.
