Season in Spain started with the first official game of the season – the SuperCup. With Ros Casares gone, the Copa de la Reina winners Perfumerias Avenida faced the Spanish league’s third placed Uni Girona.
The game was much closer than what you would expect between an ELW team and a team that can’t afford to play in international competitions.
Girona were good at using Avenida’s troubles with the posts, outrebounding the home team by 8 at halftime. Avenida held a narrow edge in rebounding in the second half. Key for Avenida in the win was forcing turnovers and getting to the freethrow line.
Egle Sulciute led Avenida with 8 points at the half, she finished the game with 13. Roneeka Hodges had a 15 point second half. She finished as the game’s top scorer and was awarded the MVP of the match.
