Round-up: Day One of Turkish Cup Group Stage

A week before the Turkish Women’s Basketball League officially starts, 12 teams, not named Fenerbahce or Galatasaray, are participating in Turkish Cup group stage.

Those 12 teams are split in 3 groups. Top two teams from each group will join Fenerbahce and Galatasaray in the next round.

Group A

A Deniz Boz three point shot with 12 seconds in regulation gave Tarsus a one point win against Mersin. Danielle Robinson made her debut for Tarsus with 16 points. Ceyhan meanwhile blew out Edremit as Jelena Ivezic with 22 points led 5 other Ceyhan players in double digits.

Group B

Led by Cheryl Ford’s 18 points and 11 rebounds Canik Belediye upset last year’s EuroCup Women finalists Kayserki KASKI. Tanja Cirov added another double-double for Canik with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Anna Vajda had 21 points and 13 rebounds as Samsun defeated Besiktas. Ozge Kavurmacioglu made a very nice debut for Besiktas with 13 points and 16 rebounds.

Group C

Istanbul Universitesi blew a 10 point third quarter lead as they allowed Botas to tie the game in regulation and lost to them in overtime. Anna Montanana and Nilay Kartaltepe each had 20+ points for Istanbul as that was not enough. Gamze Takmaz meanwhile led Botas with 17 points, Courtney Paris had 14 points and 16 rebounds – top rebounding mark of the day. Jolene Anderson scored 20 points as Homend Antakya defeated TED Ankara. Makbule Amachree had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the losing side.
