EuroLeague Women Power Rankings: Week 1

Not much of movement, especially on the top of the standings is due to overall underwhelming play by almost all of the favorites. Still, the season is still young.

P LW Team Somewhat Random Comment
1. 1. UMMC Now that they’ve been given the Final Eight, UMMC have done everything to finally bring the ELW title back to Ekat, yet I find myself wondering how will they mess it up this time.
2. 2. Fenerbahce Looked good in their Turkish league openers, so no reason to drop them due to a bye in week 1.
3. 3. Galatasaray With Fowles injury Galatasaray are now without her, Lindsay Whalen, Alba Torrens and Nevriye Yilmaz. Can they still be considered favorites against Prague?
4. 4. Bourges Basket Zoi Dimitrakou has not been the replacement for Kaltsidou I had thought she would be. Still no news on far Kaltsidou or Joens are from playing.
5. 5. Sparta&K Vidnoje First half against Tarsus was a thing of beauty by Sparta&K. The second one by them was rather ugly.
6. 6. Nadezhda Orenburg Despite the tough game against Kosice, I believe with Montgomery and Miller this team could vastly improve. Or option two is that no one outside of Montgomery and Bonner will touch the ball.
7. 10. Perfumerias Avenida Props to Avenida for last week’s game in Prague. Holding them to 31% shooting was quite impressive.
8. 7. Wisla Can-Pack With the storm in Eastern America no one can predict when Tina Charles, who lives in NY, will be able to join Wisla.
9. 8. Famila Schio Despite the win, Schio were horrible against Targoviste and won only because they got lucky. They can’t win against Nadezhda with that kind of play.
10. 9. ZVVZ USK Prague Katerina Elhotova 3/13 FG, Jelena Dubljevic 3/10, Jelena Skerovic 2/9, UGH…
11. 12. Rivas Ecopolis Have been told to look for big improvements in Anna Cruz. Hard to do when their home games aren’t televised.
12. 13. Good Angels Kosice Kosice’s inability to convert in the final minutes weren’t surprising, considering that maybe just one of their wins last season came in what could be called a nail biter.
13. 11. CCC Polkowice You can bet that loss to Mondeville will haunt Polkowice as the season goes on.
14. 17. USO Mondeville Most pleasant surprise of week 1, for sure, but there’s no way Coulibaly and Lassiter will continue to play that way. That game against Polkowice might have been one of both of their career best ones.
15. 14. UE Sopron Sopron lucked out with playing Arras in a game in which Jelena Milovanovic couldn’t hit anything.
16. 18. UNI Gyor It’s obvious that when I say Chay Shegog is no Quanitra Hollingsworth, Shegog goes and makes 8 of 9 shots she attempts.
17. 19. Targoviste Targoviste deserved to win the game against Schio. And just two turnovers from Babkina in more than 30 minutes is something unheard of.
18. 15. Tarsus Tarsus played against Sparta&K like they just met each other yesterday. Someone wake up Cindy Lima before the next game.
19. 16. IMOS Brno Unlike some would think, I actually root for Farhiya Abdi to overcome her tough last season and the tough start to this one.
20. 21. Arras Arras could not take advantage of a horrendous game by Sopron, will there be better chances?
21. 20. Novi Zagreb Only team that was routed last week.
