Both Turkish giants won their opening round games, to set up their game tomorrow.
Kayseri KASKI weren’t afraid of Fenerbahce – they had already beaten last year’s finalist at their home during Turkish league play. Both were evenly matched through the first 25 minutes of the game. But then Fenerbahce went on to score 11 consecutive points to pull ahead of Kayseri by a couple of possession – a margin that would last through the fourth quarter. Five different Fenerbahce players contributed to that run. At the end of the day it was Angel McCoughtry leading the way for Fenerbahce with 15 points on not that stellar 5 of 15 shooting. She also pulled down 11 rebounds. Spanish guard Nuria Martinez led Kayseri with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
Galatasaray appeared to be headed to a safe win over Sparta&K Vidnoje, before the Russians turned the tables, going on a 19-6 run in the second half, reducing a 14 point margin to just one point in the fourth quarter. That was the margin between the two teams before Nevriye Yilmaz, Sebnem Kimyacioglu and Sancho Lyttle scored on a 6-0 Galatasaray run to give them some breathing space as the game neared final minutes. Vidnoje seemed to be lacking a clutch performer – they went 1/8 from the field in the last four minutes, also turning the ball over twice. Sancho Lyttle, who received her FIBA Europe POY award prior to the game, led Galatasaray with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals. Shavonte Zellous had 15 points. Serbian forward Sonja Petrovic led Vidnoje with 15 points.
